According to F r e u d “In one's spiritual sufferings or illnesses which come after separation from a loved person, it can be certainly discovered that the mechanism of such an illness is turning back of one's libido to the persons loved in childhood.”

If we read closely Freud’s comment, we will start understanding that a significant relationship breakup is definitely more complicated than just the breakup with a partner. In other words, since the choice of our marital partner is significantly related to our childhood, the breakup will also have to do with our relationship with our parents. In Marie’s case, for instance, we can guess that her mother’s lack of affection towards her when she was a child is a narcissistic wound that will probably never heal completely. It is a well-documented fact that painful experiences from childhood can modify our brain in more ways than one. That is why, when Marie interacted with her husband, and he mistreated her, sad memories from her childhood seriously interfered with her present situation. Although this is an unconscious process, life repeats itself generation after generation, unless we take the initiative to break the dysfunctional cycle in therapy and start anew.
